Description
Gold Sovereign New & Pre-Loved Coins. Gold sovereigns are British Legal tender and subsequently they are very attractive to UK investors as they are exempt from Capital Gains Tax (CGT). Available as 2012 Gold Sovereigns which are brand new, sealed and in mint condition, or pre-loved coins of mixed years.
British Gold Sovereigns are one of the most popular gold bullion coins in the world.
Every Sovereign coin is legal English tender, containing .2354 troy oz. of gold, making them about the size of a U.S. nickel.
History
In 1489, King Henry VII commissioned the first production of the Gold Sovereign coin. Named after the English gold sovereign, last minted in 1604, the name was revived with the Great Recoinage of 1816. Production of these new sovereigns began in 1817.
The gold content was then fixed at 113 grains (7.322 g), equivalent to 0.2354 Troy ounces, a weight which has remained constant up to the present day. Sovereigns were minted in the UK from 1817 to 1917, 1925, and 1957 onwards. In addition, they were also minted occasionally in Australia, India, Canada and South Africa. The Royal Mint has also struck 10-shilling half sovereigns, two pound double sovereigns, and five pound quintuple sovereigns coins.
Only the Gold Sovereign and Half Sovereigns were commonly struck for full production.
In 2009, The Royal Mint released the newest coin in the sovereign series, the Gold Quarter Sovereign.
