Description
1 Troy oz Silver Britannia Coin, £2.00 coin is actually the largest and purest legal tender coin in the UK. Contains 95.8% Silver. Limited number of 2011 coins available, plus the new 2012 coin.
The UK Britannia Silver Bullion coin was Europe's first silver bullion coin. The coin has a proof-like finish, just like the Australian Kookaburra and Austrian Philharmonic silver bullion coins. The high quality finish and limited mintage, helps this bullion coin retain a higher premium price than just the silver it contains. The Silver Britannia was first released in 1997 in a collector's silver proof set was offered.
The silver bullion coin series started in 1998
Obverse
On the obverse side of the 1 oz. UK Britannia silver bullion coin is the profile of Queen Elizabeth II in her mature years by the designer Ian Rank-Broadley. His initials "IRB" are directly below the queen's neck. Inside the outer rim of the coin has the words "ELIZABETH II, D,G, REG, FID, DEF, and the value of the coin "2 POUNDS." D, G, REG, FID, DEF stand for Dei gratia regina fidei defensor is a Latin title that translates into "Defender of the Faith" in English.
The phrase has been used as part of the full style of many monarchs since the early 16th century.
Reverse
The reverse of the coin changes every two years with a new depiction of the iconic warrior maiden representing Britain in coins. The designer of the reverse side for the 2011 silver bullion coin was David Mach.
On the right side of the silver bullion coin, inside the outer rim, is the coin's name "BRITANNIA."
The year of issue and the coins weight and purity of "ONE OUNCE FINE SILVER" are also displayed on this side of the bullion coin.
