The American Buffalo Gold bullion coins were first authorized by Congress in 2005 and first minted in June 2006. The gold buffalo coin is the first .9999 fine, 24-carat gold coin ever struck by the United States Mint. The American Buffalo bullion coins obverse and reverse features images by the noted Anerican sculptor James Earle Fraser, a pupil of Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
The gold Buffalo takes its image from the 'indian head' or 'buffalo nickel' which was introduced in 1913.
Obverse
The obverse side of the coin depicts a Native American Indian Chief. Fraser said he created the design by mixing the features of three Great Indian Chiefs from different American Indian tribes. The three Indian Chiefs were Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons, all who posed as models for him to sketch. This side of the coin also displays the year of issue, located in the Indian's shoulder and the word "LIBERTY" inscribed at the top left of the bullion coin. The letter "F" is displayed directly below the year of issue, the "F" represents the first letter in James Earle Fraser's last name.
Reverse
The reverse of the gold bullion coin features the American Bison. The words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" are inscribed at the top of the gold bullion coin. "IN GOD WE TRUST" is located below the bison's head and the face value of the coin "$50" is directly below the bison. In addition, the bullion coins weight and purity "1OZ. .9999 FINE GOLD" is found directly below the face value of the American Buffalo Gold Bullion Coin.
