Authorized by Congress in 1985 and first minted in 1986, the American Eagle Gold bullion coin is minted in 22 Karat Gold. By United States law, the gold that is used to produce each coin must be taken from newly mined sources in America.
Obverse
The obverse is based on world renowned American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ design for the prized 1907 $20 gold coin. The design depicts the figure of Lady Liberty, standing proudly with wind blown flowing hair. She is holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The Capitol building is found to the right of Lady Liberty in the background. The obverse side of the bullion coin displays the year each coin was minted and the word "LIBERTY" is across the top of the coin.
Note: From 1986 - 1991, American Eagle Gold coins had the year the coin was minted stated in roman numerals. From 1992 to present, the year of issue has been numerical.
Reverse
Symbolizing American tradition and unity the reverse depicts a family of eagles, designed by Miley Busiek (now Miley Frost) Across the top of the American Eagle Gold bullion coin are the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." Found at the bottom of the bullion coin are the words "1 OZ. FINE GOLD~50 DOLLARS." In addition, on the reverse side "E PLURIBUS UNUM" is displayed at the right of the family of eagle and to the left "IN GOD WE TRUST" is inscribed. Underneath the nesting family of eagles are the initials "MB" which are the initial's of Miley Busiek and on the right and on the left are those of "JW" the original engraver of the coin.
